Code of Practice for Music Practitioners - a practical exploration of this nationally developed code
The Code of Practice was initiated by one of the Music Manifesto working parties in 2007 and completed by Sound Sense and MusicLeader that year. It was an attempt to create a national code that everyone in all sectors could buy into and use to develop their working practice.
In 2008, a research tour took a day-long workshop out to groups across the country to investigate the code and see whether it was still relevant and how it could be adapted to make it more useful as a tool for workforce development.
In 2009, Peter Moser worked with MusicLeader North West to rewrite and simplify the code with a clearer structure. This was accepted by a range of national bodies including the Musicians Union, MusicLeader, Sing Up, Trinity, RNCM, Youth Music, Sound Sense and The Sage Gateshead.
In this session, Peter will take you through some aspects of the code, 'bringing it to life' and making it relevant to YOUR work and working practice.
The Long Walk - Translating the UK Community Music experience to Hong Kong and China
The Long Walk project is a response to the Morecambe Bay tragedy of February 2004 when 23 migrant workers drowned at night whilst out fishing for cockles. The tragedy raised issues of displacement, exploitation and journey that are relevant to people, whatever their background or nationality.
It has led Peter Moser and More Music into a project in China that is hoping to make a positive contribution develop out of a tragedy. This started three years ago with research and development in Beijing, Fuijian Province and Hong Kong with support from the British Council 'Connections through Culture' fund. This resulted in The Long Walk taking place in Hong Kong over six months from Nov 2008. The project (which had already been developed in the Morecambe, Liverpool and Gateshead) involved hundreds of people in creating new music and song that reflected on the concept of 'journey' and then resulted in unique performances joining together people from across the community.
The next step is in Shanghai where a new project is being developed for EXPO 2010 working with local partners, educational institutions and musicians. Over the next three years, this will grow as we try to translate our expertise into a new context.
